In the United States, the climate is good, for it is in the North Temperate Zone. The soil is very fertile. The Great Central Plain of North America passes through the central part of the United States. People in the United States raise fruits, vegetables, corn, wheat, rice and sugar for food. People also have immense ranches for raising cows and sheep. Clothing is produced from the thousands of sheep and cotton raised in the United States. The Western and Eastern Highlands pass through the country.

The United States has a great quantity of lumber, stone, coal and iron for making comfortable homes. In what part of the country is each of these products obtained? Why? Right in the United States is found nearly everything that is necessary to make people comfortable and happy.

The United States has hundreds of towns with homes, factories, schools, hospitals and churches. Over every public building floats the country's beautiful flag, the Stars and Stripes.

Laws in the United States are made in the capital, which is named Washington D.C., after George Washington, the first president. Find the capital city of Washington on the map. It is marked with a red star. How long would it take to travel to Washington from your home? It is a beautiful city. The Capitol building is one of the finest in the world. The President of the United States lives in the White House.

Alaska, in the northwest, is a state. The island of Hawaii, west of the mainland, is also a state. The island of Puerto Rico, in the southeast, is an unincorporated United States territory. The United States also has other territories in other parts of the world.
